And a fixer-upper! And from this picture, if you listen real closely, you can almost hear the din of the traffic directly behind where I took this picture. It's in a little town with a large population of hot rod red necks!

My wife brings me all the way out here in hopes that I'll rekindle the artistic spark that I've been neglecting for the last ten years.
But first, the craftsman!

An artist's eye and a craftsman's hands make for some damned fine inspiration. Much respect!

. . . it's located in the historic district of the sleepy little Civil War era town of Front Royal, VA and nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains.

Too bad it's more than 60 miles away from either the Mrs.' or my job.

Do you mind. . .

Congrats! The house is beautiful. May it be a haven of peace and happiness for you both (thus compensating for the sucky commute!).

So. Are you into books on tape? :-)

We're taking full advantage of the fact that my family still owns a house in Annadale, clear and free (the shortcoming being that I have to share it with my brother). But I'll work here in city and go out there on the weekends. [livejournal.com profile] deviathan has limited telecommuting options through her job, and I miay or may not develop that luxury at my job. For all intents and purposes it's her house, so at least a couple nights a week I'll be into more like marraige on tape.

Congratulations! Welcome to the landed gentry. Feel free to re-register Republican; vote against property taxes, bonds, and rent control; and revel in the moist, blood-soaked satisfaction that you got yours! :-)

And termites. Remember the termites...

So what vintage is it? The porch and pillars say craftsman bungalow, but they don't usually have 2 stories, at least out on the Left Coast. Or is that an addition?

it's a craftsman, all right. 1939.

Bungalows often are 1 1/2 stories, with a small room or two on the top level with dormers. Craftsman homes have similar exterior features but internally are bigger. In other words, not all craftmans (craftmen?) are bungalows, but you see a lot of the same design features. I'm not sure which is the chicken and which is the egg of the arts and crafts architectural movement, but it's on the late side of the period.

Wow, that is late. I'm trying to remember from the interior photos how well it follows the craftsman style on the inside. I've had a number of friends and relations who've lived in really gorgeous, well-preserved craftsman bungalows down in SoCal. Our house is of that period (1923), although not really that style; a little more Spanish, and a lot more generic. It's sort of split level, LR, DR, and kitchen in the front, and then in the back, a half-flight of stairs up to the bedrooms and bathroom, half-flight down to the garage, laundry, and workroom. Some of the houses in our neighborhood have more steeply pitched roofs than ours and dormers in the attic, which a few have turned into extra rooms. Others have a second story atop the back half (so 2 1/2 stories). Ours is the smallest, "starter" model, which originally sold for about $3K...

I've had a couple people describe various features and the layout from this single picture of the outside so I'm pretty certain this is a standard kit with an addition.
