I am a neighbor of Annandale High on within a block of the northern entrance of the school via Medford Drive and have been for 36 years. I write to you this morning with a suggestion:
We have drug-free school zones in Fairfax County mandated by law: How about a Litter-free school zone? I am, on a daily basis, continually cleaning up snack wrappers, soda pop bottles, and cigarette butts (!?) from my lawn that are deposited there by your students (although, being high school students I would expect they should know better by now. After all, isn’t this their neighborhood, too?) Obviously, I’m not suggesting anything be written into law, but I do think it would be a gesture of good stewardship on behalf of Annandale High School if it were to maintain and empty trash repositories within a block or two of all entrances of the facility so that conscientious students would have a more suitable place than my and my neighbors’ lawns to leave their garbage. Maybe coupled with a light PR campaign within the walls advertizing the school and surrounding neighborhoods as “theirs, and a reflection of them, Atoms spirit, etc, etc” would serve to heighten awareness and a sense of ownership within your students in regard to their community. I appreciate your earnest consideration of my suggestion. If you’d like to contact me with whatever questions, comments, or concerns I can be reached during the day at the phone numbers below.
On behalf of the Medford Neighbors,
Best Regards,
