I tasted one of our home-grown jalepeños today. . .

The larger ones (like the one I ate) are about the size of an average man's forefinger from the 2nd knuckle down. I'm, as of yet, unimpressed. Maybe they're just immature, but also I think I may be watering them too much. I'll look into it further.

peppers certainly have to mature. take habaneros, for instance. if you eat one before it turns orange, it will taste like your average bell pepper. but once it's orange, you best be careful about how much you're willing to eat at once (how much of a single pepper, that is).
