This link is from ET (gone but not forgotten!) There's good ideas for folks even if you don't live in 'rlington, Va (I don't . . .)

I've replaced my passcard for the secure building I work in, I have a functional bicycle (or two). Now I just need to get me a couple of those freenky bicycle outfits and actually ride the 5.11 miles from here to home to get a fix on how long I can expect the trip to take in the morning. I see no reason why I shouldn't be a bicycle commuter by Monday (unless that acl gives out all the way). I'll have to figure out the finer points of carrying and changing into my 'business casual' goob suit, always open and ready for the next mistake.
The single greatest thing a person can do--for health, for the environment, for traffic congestion and time management--is to ride a bike to work. If every adult American pedaled to work just one day per week, we'd reduce auto emissions by 92 million tons of CO2 per year, burn 5.1 trillion calories (shedding a collective 1.5 billion pounds) per year, ease traffic congestion, save time (no need to go to the gym that day) and reduce stress with the simple pleasure of riding a bike.

I would love to bike to work. I used to do so when I was living in Balmer (hon). But, as my commute is normally 45 minutes in a car, I shudder to think what it would be on bike. What we all need also is to work closer to where we live. With housing prices being what they are, it's impossible for many (if not most).

Or am I just rationalizing.

The hospice building has a facility in the basement for showering, etc. I'm really close, it's the easy season; Why not? No, I consider myself lucky for this opportunity.

But therein lies the rub. Why isn't this an option for anyone who chooses it?

because housing is expensive.

further complicating matters are situations where multiple destinations are in opposite directions; in our household, kim lives within ready cycling distance of her place of employment (about 2 miles). however, my commute is 18 and change.

i haven't had a bicycle since mine was stolen from my parents' garage when i was in high school. i took up rollerblading during and after college as a substitute, then, unfortunately, lived in a series of places where it wasn't something i could do with any regularity.

i'm looking at joining a hockey league down here.

I certainly hear that! This is the 1st time in a long time this has been a viable option for me. It's a shame, that's all . . .

the cheapest way to get cycling specific clothes is at performance. i think the leesburg store (http://www.performancebike.com/inform/store_profile.cfm?Store_ID=57) is the closest to annandale.

Leesburg is a haul from here. There used to be a location in Bailey's X-roads, but then if they 'fix' everyone's bike like they did mine once I could see them closing that shop. Thanks for the tip!

Biking is something that I used to enjoy back in the day until bike was stolen. At my g'ma's house, my cousin and I used to go riding - or was it racing to avoid being sucked dry by the May Flies? I don't think I could have biked to work way out in Reston. If I were up to it, I would be in pretty good shape though!!

I think your trek of only 5 miles away from work along with your enthusiasm towards biking makes a great combo! Just remember that you are burning a bunch of calories so you will need to eat more, or at least not skip lunch :)
