I think there's a couple of trial locations in SF right now. Our house would be a good location for a solar/wind combo - we've got some south-facing roof, and generally when it's not sunny, it's because wind is blowing fog in off the ocean. Small-l-libertarian though I am, I'm really intrigued by Berkeley-across-the-Bay's proposal for government-backed loans for solar projects, which just passed last week. Gavin, are you paying attention? Forget WiFi, give us clean power!
This is Pop's place from the top of his south-facing roof (that's the nothern most "peak" of Skyline Drive, the dragon aspect, 3 or 4 miles in the distance) and behind him is a hill and a few hundred acres of pasture and vineyard. Between the sun and wind I think he's an ideal placement for a turbine. But he'd be happy just to be able to power his pump for the well and the blower for his oil furnace when big windstorms knock his power out.
No, that's a very valid concern. There's a lot o birds, and my dad maintains bird feeders, close to the house where they can be observed/photographed. Hummingbirds love the pines and they're a special flavor of cool. Not to mention they get drunk.
What I mean is as long as we factor how 'convenient' access is for Pops to refill the feeder against it's proximity to the turbine we can probably establish a setup that maintain a safe distance between the shit and fan, so to speak. I think he'd probably install a turbine to the building in the lower right corner, whereas the bird feeders are behind me (from vantage) and there's a building between them. That also belongs on the list of questions to ask the consultant who evaluates the site before installation.
