The Financial Aid office of GMU is open to walk-ins every Tuesday evening 'til 8pm in the South Chesapeake module (WTF? - the South chesapeake module) So I'll go straighten that mess out tomorrow. I can't describe the resistence that arrises when I'm faced with this; I don't know why it is so difficult. It's not only demotivating but resembles something much closer to panic. Is there a named phobia for the fear of institutes of higher learning? - I have that!

I'm a good student - that is, I make good grades, so it's not that. I've discussed this some with Dr. Rick, not a medical doc but a professor at one of the offending academies located somewhere outside of Pittsburgh. I tried to describe to him the way I feel about it, because he's very adept at cutting through the bullshit. But even he admits that my reasons for choosing GMU is a recipe for 'non-success', for 'dis-fulfillment' (because it offers a degree program that I'm tangentally interested in, and it's convenient). I'm having a difficult time reconciling my lack of enthusiasm for the rush to higher learning to 'lift us out of ignorance and poverty'. I guess the progamming for further inculcation into the 'One right way to live' is just too obvious when seen from the vantage of one who does not want to spend the rest of hsi life chasing dollars only to spend them further up the pyramid.

I have to remember what Daniel Quinn wrote about how the system of 'higher education' regulates the job market, by promoting some and holding others back (more often than not along an economic deliniations) - that is its purpose.

Maybe my going into the priesthood, if it comes to that, will render all of this moot, but regardless, we have the kids to think about.

I wonder . . . Are there any curiculum that teach one how to live successfully outside of the system of money = choice?

The only ones I am even remotely familiar with are taught by survivalists and neo-hippies.

I read about a couple who owned a small amount of land and actually pitched what amounted to several permanent teepees for their living space. Their housing cost them near nothing. Of course, they had other considerations like the fact that bugs and small animals could fairly easily get into their abode and no running water (they showered at the local gym).

Heh, this might encourage him. :)

I'm dragging him kicking and screaming into the 20th century. Eventually we'll get round to the 21st.

Let's just skip straight to the 21st - At least that holds some possibilty. I think that's the one I came back here for, anyway.

The last has already proven to have very little redeaming qualities - Disco? the Atomic bomb? And humanity has spent it burning through three quarters of our planet's resources and has done nothingto put anything back.

I wish I could remember their names, but alas, it's escaped into the oblivion of my post 40 brain. I remember seeing something on this couple on a TV documentary on alternative housing. They also showed a building made with recycled diapers and some other creative and cheap alternatives to the standard theme of shop and drop (look around the area you want and dump huge sums of money). Considering how few people live in tee-pees, what are the odds it was not this couple. I'd be fascinated to hear more, though.
