Management offered and I declined. I asked them not to hire a temp for me during crunch time. Yes, we need the help - in October! If you hire me temp anyway, I need
∙ someone organized, to the point of OCDGive me someone to train while there's not too much going on (like there is currently) and I'd have them up and running like Speed Racer on coke. So I've jumped through hoops to show her to do things that will really help out and have realized through that process that a trained monkey, indeed, cannot do my job (not to say that my temp is a trained monkey, in fact she's quite bright and diligent, or that my job is rocket science - it's certainly not). But I'm dealing with a learning curve here; not only do I have to take the time to train them, but I have to follow up and correct all the resultant errors. Plus, they're all mouseketeers (my temp and my volunteers) - they aren't taking too well to the concept of the keyboard command shortcuts that are the secret of my success - that is, they don't care to learn them. The volunteers have largely been left to their own devices and know what they know through minimal training, so now when I go back to train them correctly they are intimidated by all the 'extra steps'. Yes, it is a very convoluted process, that's why I figured out a set procedure to cut out all of the redundancy without skipping anything. It's just like playing the piano - the 'notes' are always in the same places, the same distances apart, only without the pretty tune . . .
∙ someone comfortable with a relational database, and
∙ a musician (preferably a pianist)
What is worth doing, at all, is worth doing well. So, now I'm trying to distract them with innocuous tasks, something that will keep them busy and won't create too much more work for me (clean-up on aisle 5, 8, 13, and 24!) so that I can . . . .well, write in my journal. That's right. Who am I tryin' to fool? There's no way I'm getting anything done while I have temps to train. Not a very effective use of resources, but then, I did ask that they not hire a temp in the 1st place.
