It's effect is closer to demerol than it is to LSD. The 90 proof has nothing to do with the fact that you could very well fall asleep standing straight up (and stand there comfortably for hours) if the wallpaper in the bathroom wasn't so entertaining. I ultimately end up relaxing to the point that I tend to re-injure old wounds, like that pesky medial meniscus tear - OW, FUCK! It contains a neurotoxin derived from wormwood, called thujone that is actually a convulsant poison (yum yum!). If you like licorice, you might like absinthe. If you like anise on steroids then you'd Love it! Oh, I think it's only legal in like 3 countries on the planet.
If you like neither anise, nor licorice, or anything herbal in any way, shape, or form, don't bother.
From what little I've tried, I found that it's a very nice buzzy buzz, but it's so strong flavor-wise that I don't think I'd be capable of ingesting enough to get any interesting results other than, hmm, I am pleasantly drunk and giddy, thank you for asking.
It does have a distinct herbal character that if you like that sort of thing, you'd be in love with the taste. I understand why people like it, but I'm not a big fan of the flavor, myself.
We mixed it by pouring about 3 fl. ounces into a stemmed beer glass, laying a fork across the rim (ghetto!) with a single sugar cube balanced on the tines, then pouring cold filtered water over to disolve it. I hate licorice (it's the only 'food' I dislike, at all). But this method makes it quite palatable.
Yep, I've done the sugar method, with the required slotted spoon, even. (Although you have to admit that hanging out with people who have their own absinthe spoons is a bit on the silly side!).
Even tamed with sugar, I can't find myself liking the taste. Then again, there are so many kinds out there, and some taste better than others. I was partaking with someone who knows their stuff, so I'm assuming it was of decent quality, but it's not my bag. I'll take the coconut rum, please. :)
